Depositions in Japan are controlled by detailed agreements between the United States and the Government of Japan. Therefore, depositions of willing witnesses are permitted to take place only at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo or the U.S. Consulate in Osaka. It is illegal to take depositions outside of the Embassy or Consulate in Japan.

A great deal of planning and bureaucratic involvement is necessary to conduct depositions in Japan.  However, court reporters Osaka experience and close proximity to the U.S. Embassy in Kita-ku and the U.S. Consulate in Osaka enables us to personally assist you through these procedures, obtain up-to-the-minute local information and be a liaison between you and those venues.

Arbitrations

As a party to the 1958 New York Convention and 1927 Geneva Convention, Japan’s arbitral awards are enforceable outside of Japan as well. Foreign lawyers may represent a party in international arbitration hearings in Japan. Planet Depos can schedule coverage for your Osaka arbitration.

Conference Rooms

As mentioned previously, depositions in Osaka can only be taken at the U.S. Consulate, and that reservation must be made through the U.S. Consulate according to their detailed timetable. Osaka offers many conference rooms for meetings outside of your deposition, and Planet Depos can reserve one for you at a hotel or office, should you require such assistance.

Travel Tips

There is no tourist visa required to visit Japan for U.S. citizens visiting for under 90 days. A passport valid for the intended period of stay, with one blank page for an entry stamp is required. (It is recommended to travel internationally with at least six months validity on your passport.) Kansai International Airport (KIX) receives flights from the U.S. Your local reporter and videographer can provide dining and shopping recommendations. Planet Depos can provide hotel recommendations.
